Decorating With Greek Key Motif

The Greek Key or fret pattern design has its origins in ancient Greece and is their most important symbol. Also known and referred to as Meandros or the Hellenic Key it possesses a symbolic meaning of eternity. The Greek key design is one of the most common designs in ancient Greek art, and many ancient Greek temples incorporated the sign of the meander. It is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif. Since the pattern is simple and geometric, it’s understandable why so many people have used it.This motif lends an ancient graphic touch to all kinds of decorative items today – case goods, fabrics and trims, carpets, tiles, and so much more. While the Greek key design is iconic, timeless, and classic, it fares well in sophisticated modern interiors as well.

The Greek Key design is generally associated with the world of fine art and ancient sculpture, but has  become one of the most sought after styles.

Greek Key also looks marvelous in sleek contemporary  interiors.

Some trends come, some trends go, and others like the Greek Key enjoy repeat performances.

The look of modern, updated geometric forms is showing up in a new way that is truly fresh and fun,” says Britt Albright, the creative director for HFI Brands, which manufactures and markets the Lilly Pulitzer home collection.

The symmetry, order and proportion of the Greek key are all classic elements of design.

Greek Key goes well with any style.

The Greek Key motif has always been a popular symbol of status and sophistication

Often considered a motif for traditional decor, it can be modernized by using bright bold colors like hot pink or turquoise.

My personal favorite way to us the motif is by trimming walls in it.

Simple touches like this Greek Key inspired nailhead trim will help vamp up your style.

It's a great design element for a headboard.

The design is noticeably incorporated in lamps, curtains, bedding, tables, rugs, picture frames, jewelry and just about anything else.

This is a small sitting room/office that I did  for a client in which I stenciled a Greek Key pattern around the room and used fabric for the window treatments with the motif on the borders. Accessorized with a few classical accessories and a great gold and verdigris chair.

In addition, Greek key motif has often been used for borders around walls, as pattern on textiles and for various features often shown on furniture.

There are many modern Greek Key patterned fabrics to choose from for upholstery, window treatments, pillows.

If it is only a small touch such as this drapery trim, it screams elegance!
